Invincible sweeps yacht rating results of River Derwent
Bellerive Yacht Club member Harold Clark and his Farr 1104 Invincible made a clean sweep of the rating results in Derwent Sailing Squadron’s Pennant racing on the River Derwent today, winning both races under IRC and AMS handicap categories.
The four wins have lifted Invincible to provisional first place in the season pointscore for the DSS Pennant Division 1 series, overtaking arch rival Don Calvert’s Castro 40 Intrigue from The Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania in both categories midway through the summer season.
In another double win, Roger Jackman’s Dr Who took first place on corrected time in both races under PHS handicapping. The Farr 40, War Games, skippered by Wayne Banks-Smith, took line honours in both races, also gaining two third placings on corrected time in PHS and a third in the AMS category.
The River Derwent turned on a perfect day for sailing, pleasantly warm with a steady south-easterly seabreeze that freshened from 12 knots to 16 knots. The DSS set testing courses of two windward/leeward legs and a triangle for Division 1 boats.
Invincible, which earlier this year won her fifth King of the Derwent, had an outstanding day on the water, with precise helming, smart tactics and fast sailing handling taking full advantage of her favourable IRC and AMS ratings.
Main competition came from Dr Who, Sally Rattle’s Archie and David Bean’s Auch! in the IRC category and from Intrigue, with a third and a second under AMS ratings. Under PHS handicaps, Dr Who won race one from Archie and War Games and race two from Scarlet Runner (Borlase/Chau) and War Games.
The keenly fought 9-Metre division also saw both races go to Robert Woehler’s Cape 30 Sunview Homes. She won race one from Spare Time (Shane Powell) and Rouseabout (Graham Inglis) and race two from Spare Time and Buggbear (Ron Bugg).
Only three boats turned out for both the International Dragon and International J24 classes, with Nick Rogers winning both Dragon races with Karabos IX and Street Car (Peter Bingham) winning both J24 races.
Divisions 2 and 3 sailed just one race, with Peter Haros’ taking out Division 2 with Wings Three, from Hornet (Neville Georgeson) and Atilla (John Hunn). In Division 3, Epoxy Warrior (Ross Mannering) won from Kaiulani (Malcolm Cooper) and Don’t Bug Me (Peter Bugg).
